Ans. The poet of the poem ‘Keeping Quiet’ is Pablo Neruda.

3. What does the poet, ‘Keeping Quiet’ wish us to do?
Ans. The poet of ‘Keeping Quiet’ wants all the people of the earth to keep silent and experience an exotic moment.

Ans. ‘Exotic moment’ in “Keeping Quiet’ means an extraordinary moment of peace that is away from the din and rush of the modem life.

It is generally observed that most of the ills and troubles of the world are caused by our rush or hurry. Violence is caused by anger. Keeping quiet and still will give us necessary respite and ensure peace

Ans. It is a part of exercise in meditation. All distractions and digressions are washed away and man is in a moment of bliss.
3. What is the sadness that the poet refers to in the poem ‘Keeping Quiet’? 2013, 2014, 2015
Why do men become sad? How can this sadness be overcome?
Ans. Man’s sadness is formed out of his own thinking. Men fail to understand themselves. They are always threatening themselves with death. When they do not understand themselves they become sad. A long silence might interrupt this sadness and make them good.
4. Do you think poet advocates total inactivity and death?
Ans. No, he does not advocate either total inactivity or death. He makes it quiet clear that stillness should not be confused with ‘total inactivity’ or equated to it. Total inactivity brings death. But the poet has no truck with death. His stillness means halting of harmful and hostile human activities.
5. What symbol from nature does the poet invoke to say that there can be life under apparent stillness?
Ans. The poet invokes a power symbol of the earth to say that there can be life under apparent stillness. He says that earth is a great teacher when everything seems dead, later proves to be alive. The earth never attains total inactivity. Nature remains at work even under apparent stillness and keeps the earth alive.
6. Why shouldn’t we speak in any language and move our arms so much?
Ans. People of this world indulge in unnecessary debates and disputes. The poet urges them to stop speaking in any language. They should speak through their hearts. Men have moved their arms only to harm others. Therefore, they should not move their arms so much.
7. Why does the poet want to convey by addressing fishermen and the man gathering salt?

Ans. Pablo Neruda is against any kind of violence. He calls upon the fishermen that they should not harm whales living in the cold seas of the Polar Regions. The poet is also against any kind of self-torturing. The man who is gathering salt and has hurt his hands must look after himself. He must take care of his hands.
8. What does the port say about different kind of wars? What alternative does he suggest?
Ans. The poet wants a total cessation of all kind of wars. Green wars against the environment, wars with poisonous gases and fire must stop immediately. Instead of indulging in wars the people must come out in their best dresses with their brothers. They should go out for a walk, enjoying themselves doing nothing.

Ans. According to the poet exotic moment will be the moment when mankind will be free from rush hurry, noise, harmful actions and all his sufferings. It will be moment of peace and tranquility. A bliss  of extraordinary calmness would prevail on the whole earth .

Ans. Earth teaches us an important lesson. The Earth is never dead. When everything seems to be dead, it remains still alive.

Ans. The people of the world need excuses to fight among themselves. Let them keep quiet and not speak in any language. They may not indulge in reasoning, disputes and quarrels among themselves.
(d) What does the poet mean by not move our arms so much?
Ans. The poet means that we should not involve in any physical activity.
(e) Why should we not move our arms so much?
Ans. The poet wants us not to move our arms because man has used arms only to kill and destroy others.
